Do I need a Lawyer or Consultant?
This is something for you to decide. Certainly, it is possible for many applicants to go through the system very successfully by themselves. Study the self assessment form - remember to be honest with yourself, especially when it comes to language ability and personal suitability. If you have any doubts at all, mark yourself low. Consider your health and the health of your dependent applicants. Study the newsgroup and see what problems others run into. See what answers they get too.
The application process is very expensive. If you are not successful you do NOT receive a refund of the application fee. You do receive a refund of the Right of Landing Fee but, even so, the Application Fee, medical expenses and search fees can all add up to quite an investment. If you have any doubts at all, or your circumstances are in any way special then it does make sense to get expert legal advice.
A small investment in an initial interview might well pay off down the road. A good lawyer/consultant should be able to give you a realistic picture of your situation and then you can decide whether to proceed alone or continue with legal help or to abandon the application altogether.
